Guided Tours

Tucher Mansion and the Renaissance Garden
During the special guided tour of Nuremberg's most beautiful "Renaissance Island", you will find out a lot about botanics and about Renaissance horticulture.

Guided Tours of the Renaissance Garden

In the summer months, the Museum Tucher Mansion provides an oportunity for a refreshing visit to the dreamy Renaissance gardens. And if you want to find out more about the flourishing plants and bright splendour in the flower beds, your are very welcome to join a guided tour of the gardens (in German). Our expert volunteer guides will not only provide information on the botanic aspects, but also tell interested visitors quite a bit about Renaissance horticulture, which was taken as a model for the exterior design for the former Tucher summer residence.

The gardens which were newly designed in 2000 by garden designer, Bernard Lorenz, serve as a connection between the Musem Tucher Mansion and the re-constructed Hirsvogel Hall. This has created a unique Renaissance island in Nuremberg's inner city, which was awarded the 2004 Nuremberg Architecture Award. Since then, many visitors have expressed an interest in the garden's design principles and in finding out more about the plants and Renaissance horticulture.

The terraced gardens between Tucher Mansion and Hirsvogel Hall were based on the Renaissance style.

Renaissance garden design was geared towards the representation needs of upper-class city families, such as the Tucher family. Garden areas were created as "paradise" or amusement gardens open to visitors. But kitchen gardens with herb beds and fruit trees were also staple elements of 16th century garden architecture. Horticulture then often included small fountains, water courses and mazes constructed from trellises with creepers. Basic geometric shapes and symmetries were also key elements of Renaissance garden designs.
